Summer Reading Challenge 2018

Post by Sky Alton » Mon Jul 09, 2018 4:00 pm

Summer’s here! You’ve disembarked from the Hogwarts Express, you’ve spent time with your family, you’ve unpacked (well, maybe) and you’re thinking ‘now what?’. Worry not, there are countless fictional worlds out there to while away the hours until Hogwarts welcomes you home. So, grab yourself a pillow, a drink and a pile of books and let’s get started!

The 2018 Summer Reading Challenge offers you the chance to indulge in as many books as you can manage and earn a shiny award for the pleasure. Below, you can pledge the amount of books you’d realistically like to read between July 9th and August 26th. This could be a single book or as many as 5 (or more!). Those who meet their pledged amount in the time will receive The Summer Reading Challenge Award.

To qualify for the award, you’ll need to post something around the Book Club for every book that forms part of your pledge. This doesn't have to be just a series of reviews: you might present a new author on The Bookshelf or start a conversation about something more general you noticed in several books on Between the Pages.

You'll find specific guidelines in the 'Overview' threads on each subforum but here are a couple things to keep in mind. To ensure that people get the most out of any reviews you write for The Bookshelf, we’re asking you to make your comments a minimum of 80 words long. This does not include the info about the book’s title, author or series. If someone has already started a topic about your book, author or subject, please contribute to that rather than starting a brand new one of your own. Also, make sure the review or discussion is yours and based on your own thoughts while reading: lifting a review from Goodreads or elsewhere on the internet is categorically not allowed.

You can’t reduce your pledge if you decide you pledged too many books. However, you can raise it to a higher number later on if you feel your reading is going well. While online fanfiction and the like doesn’t count, you’re free to mix it up with some re-reading, audio books or graphic novels. You can read a Harry Potter Book or a book we read for one of our Monthly Book Discussions but this cannot be your only book and we’d prefer you post a discussion, rather than a review.

Once you've made a post about a book, please edit your reply down below to reflect that and point us in the right direction with a link to your book review. You can keep track of your official progress with our spreadsheet. Remember, until you’ve posted about it, the book doesn’t count and won’t appear. If it’s been a few days and your latest book hasn’t been edited in after you’ve posted about it, please drop me a line and I’ll get to it as soon as possible.

If you have any further questions not covered here, head on over to the Questions Thread

Get pledging below and happy reading!
