Summer Prompt: Objects of Power

Post by Sky Alton » Wed Jun 21, 2017 5:46 pm

The ancient study of alchemy is concerned with making the Philosopher’s Stone, a legendary substance with astonishing powers. The Stone will transform any metal into pure gold. It also produces the Elixir of Life, which will make the drinker immortal.
-J.K. Rowling

The stone is an interesting object and no mistake. It’s incredibly powerful and, in certain hands, could be used for very dark purposes. Alternatively, it could be used to prolong a life, ending in a nice, comfortable retirement in Devon. But it isn’t exactly evil or good in itself, is it?

To celebrate Harry’s encounter with this legendary stone, we’d like you to write your own story (minimum 200 words) about a powerful magical object. The catch is that the object can’t be inherently good or bad in itself-that has to come from how it gets used.

There is no deadline as such for these prompts but if you’d like it to count towards your chance of earning the award for a specific year, we’ll need it by the end of that school year. If you’re comfortable sharing, then post below. If not, email your story to us via hol.bookclub @ (without the spaces). Oh and remember it’s a good idea to check through your piece carefully for spelling and grammatical errors as they make it harder for people to properly enjoy your work.

The Crystal Mask

Many millennia ago, seers were renowned in the magical and muggle world alike. There once lived a woman who was said to be the greatest seer throughout all the land. If one knows the story of Cassandra from the Greek tragedies, then you should also know that this seer is said to be an ancestor born many, many moons before. She is rumored to have lived on the island of Atlantis and was one of the very few who found safe passage before the island was destroyed and hidden away forever.

Those who left the great island were told only to bring what was necessary and to leave the rest of their belongings behind. The seer was able to save an old mask whose design had been gifted to her in a vision. Although she did not know what use the mask would be to her, she soon found out. With the destruction of Atlantis, the elderly seer became very ill and blind to reality. Her visions came in waves, circles that she could not even understand.

When they had reached shelter along with the priestesses and the nobles that had traveled alongside them, the seer was confined to her bed in an old tent made from skins and leaves. The others tried to discern the visions rapidly spilling forth from her lips, but none could make sense of them. One of the seer’s caretakers then remembered the mask that lied in an ornate box, the box the seer had said could not be lost. The caretaker opened the box and with a strong feeling that came from the goddess, placed the mask on the seer’s face.

All at once, the visions were clear. The seer was well and what she saw, she could discern. It was so clear, no fog, no swimming through the waves, and it was in that moment she knew what must be done for their people to survive. A new temple must be built or the fate of Atlantis would meet them again. When the time came for the seer to move on, the silver mask that had been lined with sparkling crystal jewels, was placed in the temple to honor the gods and the goddess for their gift.

As time carried on, a war began between the peoples of the Atlantean colony and the other villages throughout the land. The Atlanteans began to rely more on the weapons of their friends than on their magics. Those weapons would eventually destroy them and the temple would burn in flames. The mask, however, was spared.

It’s hard to say where the Crystal mask, the name that has since been given to this powerful magical artefact, has found its home. Rumors are heard every now and then of a powerful seer who may have the mask on hand, but all of them to this date have been found to be false. It’s no wonder that many continue to look for this powerful mask, both sides of good and evil. With the foretelling so crystal clear, and given to sights that are said to be thousands and thousands of years away like the seer of the Atlanteans knowing she would have a descendant named Cassandra who would give prophecies like her and also of a war that prophesied the death of the serpent-faced man, it’s no wonder so many in the magical world seek this mask. If one could know their future absolutely, could change it and know the outcome, would one not be tempted to do so?
