SQL 2018 - Week 4 - Team Mascots

Post by Prof. Tarma Amelia Black » Mon Jul 30, 2018 12:49 am

Who (or what) is your team mascot? Both Flanders and Transylvania are renowned for their idiosyncratic and unique customs, garb and pets (or creatures). You have your siggy (maybe) and you have your garb (perhaps).

Now, who or what is your mascot? Is it an individual or is it a collection of individuals? One creature or many? Note: it does not have to be eagles or vampire bats! So ... who is your Team Mascot?

Post a picture of your mascot (maximum 600 x 600 size) and then tell us what (or who) it is. Is it a creature? A being? A beast? A spirit? Does he or she (or they) have a name? Fifty words minimum to count -- but that's not difficult seeing as you will be telling us what they are, if they have individual names, where they live and maybe even how they came to be your Team Mascot.

Again, stick figures are fine!

Have this posted within a week and earn 5 Team Points for your Team. If you post after that date, you will earn 3 Team Points. Please keep in mind that all activities are due by August 20th.

Note: If for accessibility reasons you can’t complete this task, please just let me know via HOL Forum PM and an alternative can be worked out.

The mascot for Team Flanders is an anthromorphic left hand named "Lefty Flanders". This was in honor of the first Seeker of Team Flanders, Matthias Maes, who would consistently make lunging grabs for the Golden Snitch with his left hand. Flemish fans would wave their left hand in honor of Maes whenever he caught a Snitch. And upon Maes's retirement, it was decided to honor him by designing a mascot after Maes's left hand! Lefty has an American cousin usually known as "Thing" who is often confused for Lefty. The only way to tell the two apart is to have a good sense of direction: "Thing" is an anthromorphic right hand while Lefty is an anthromorphic left hand!

The Winged cat is a most mystical creature. It possesses immense wisdom and stealth which has caused it to be hunted by wizards for centuries. Its fur is like liquid gold and its stare will mesmerize even the most reluctant beholder. This amazing creature is believed to have its origin in the north of Norway and is very rarely sighted. However, one of these bewitching creatures has recently been sighted in the company of an extraordinary quidditch team. It is no longer a secret that Transylvania has managed to earn the beautiful felines' trust. It has become their lucky charm, and will be sure to secure their future victories.

Team Transylvania's mascot is actually a man named Terrible Terrance! His animagus form is a Graphorn* (which means auditioning a new Terrance is always a pain!) He does a little dance with a purple cape, and then turns into a Graphorn and runs around the stadium! No one knows how this got started as our mascot, but it worked really well for marketing! We always sell lots of little purple capes to kids and small purple towels for people to wave around while cheering on our team!

Image

*Please note, the graphorn is my depiction based on the below description from Pottermore, and so only kind of resembles the ones we see in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Pottermore wrote:Large and greyish purple in colour, the Graphorn has a humped back, two long sharp horns and walks on four-thumbed feet

This obviously magnificent creature is erumpent. It is a huge African magical beast; its apperance is similar to rhinoceros, altough each erumpent is much much bigger. It is a powerful creature, with a thick hide capable of repelling most curses and charms, a single long horn, and a thick tail.
Every team would be greateful to have such amazing and rare creature for their mascot. And this erumpent is well protected at Transylvania team.

This is Boris! Boris is a Niffler and has that name because of a Muggle who played the part of a vampire in their culture. (Did you know that the Muggles have a device like what we have in our newspapers, where the subject move? And they can make noises, too! Talkies, I think they are called.) Anyway, Boris is the current representative Mascot of Transylvania. Nifflers became the mascot when one of the Captains, a long time ago, lost a bet and didn't have the funds to cover it. Since the bet was with goblins who are notorious for not having a sense of humour, and who have a particularly scary magic of their own, the Captain (Dirk Smitherrung) obtained permission for an extension of the bet to be covered and asked if those of his team could help in the gathering of the funds. Upon a 'yes' reply, he immediately declared Nifflers to be a part of the team, an honoured mascot, as 'twere, and set them loose in the stadiums of the Quidditch field. They promptly recovered enough lost coinage and jewelry to cover the bet -- and have remained the Mascot ever since.

Many moons ago, Silviana auditioned to be the mascot of the Ballycastle Bats. She didn't fit the vision of the team and the gig went to her fun-loving cousin Barny the fruit bat. Silviana was thrilled when Transylvania began their mascot search. As a native of the infamous Hoia Forest, Silviana is proud to represent her home of Transylvania.

I'm going with a throwback. For the Transylvania team mascot, I nominate the Michelin Man.

Image

Michelin Man's real name is Bibendum, and he has over a hundred years of experience as a mascot. He even served as mascot for the Nimbus 2000s during SQL 2015 and did a fantastic job cheering us on to an undefeated season.

Bibendum is a stack of old tires, and like the Michelin brothers, Edouard and Andre, he is also French. I know what you're thinking. "Why would the Transylvanian team have a French mascot? It doesn't make sense, Cody." Keep in mind, Michelin is based in Clermont-Ferrand, just a stone's throw (2,000ish miles) away from present day Romania, where Transylvania is located. We're practically neighbors!

Bibendum and I go way back, so he's agreed to give us a bit of a discount for his services. He's only going to charge us 6,000,000 galleons per match to be our mascot. What a bargain!

Meet Sawyer! He's a sentient giant octopus who came to the surface one day and decided to live amongst the wizarding community. Nobody could figure out where or how he came to be this way, as Sawyer didn't really remember much about his early life. All he knew, one day he could process thoughts and talk in a weird language that no other creatures in the deep sea understood. Apparently, he was talking English. So when he saw some fishermen talking in a language he understood, he jumped on their boat, very excited to find other creature who he understood. When the ministry caught wind of this shocking incident (since the fishermen were of course, muggles), they quickly reached out to Sawyer and fix everything in the muggle lives back to normal.

The staffs at Department of Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures believes that Sawyer was enchanted by an unknown wizard/witch, or he had accidentally ingested some potent potion or charmed object. Anyway, Sawyer is a bit of an eccentric, and he absolutely loves skateboarding. He's got a liking for muggle fashion too, as you can see in the image. He needs money to shop shoes and hats, so he went out and applied as the mascot for Flanders! You should see Sawyer in action with his super awesome flying skateboard tricks at the beginning of each of our game!

This is Fergus the Flobberworm, one of the seven Flobberworms that make up the mascots of the Flanders Quidditch Team. They (or rather their predecessors) were found one day in Quidditch equipment after it rained and everything became damp. From that day forward, they were officially a team mascot.

There are seven Flobberworms for seven players on the pitch and each wears a uniform that the players in the air wear. The uniforms are enchanted to fit the creatures and change names and numbers if there is a substitution.

You may continue to post your Team Mascots, but from now on, they are worth 3 Team Points.
