Fan Section: Poetry

Postby Will Lestrange » Mon Jul 10, 2017 5:34 am

Quidditch, and other broom games, have long inspired poetry!

Remember this Gaelic poem written in the eleventh century?
The players assembled, twelve fine, hearty men,
They strapped on their cauldrons, stood poised to fly,
At the sound of the horn they were swiftly airborne
But ten of their number were fated to die.

Or what about the classic, written by Ingolfr the Iambic in the early 1400s
Oh, the thrill of the chase as I soar through the air
With the Snitch up ahead and the wind in my hair
As I draw ever closer, the crowd gives a shout
But then comes a Bludger and I am knocked out.

This is your opportunity to create such a poem! To earn QWC points and Beans, it must be at least four lines long, about Quidditch (or some other broom game) and of your own making. Also, keep your poem HOL appropriate! Write it -- and post it below. You have until 11:59 PM HOL on July 17th to do so!

You get 5 QWC points for creating your poem. You will also receive 10 Beans for said creation.

You do not have to use the poetic forms shown for your own poem. However, whatever you use, it must be at least 4 lines long to get those points and beans.

Quodpot Haiku

First question or fifth.
Take a chance to answer it.
Just do not get BOOMed!

Should I answer fast?
Or I do it very slow?
What a lovely game.

I raced across the Aingingein course
Not quite as fast as a thoroughbred horse.
But unless the next player beats my time
The Ainginigein cup is as good as mine.

He's halfway through the course, on pace
To beat my time over this race.
But he swerved slightly off track
And flames emerge out of his back!

His time won't count as he caught fire.
So I'll get the prize of my desire.
Though it wasn't my best race today,
A win's a win... as people say!

The cheers of the crowd
"Ireland! Ireland! Ireland! Ya!"
Will went in, scoring!
But a blurb of scarlet robes
Cody! It's him, everyone!

Flying high above the pitch
Hoping to be the winning witch
That elusive ball
Agile and so small
Zooming after the Golden Snitch

We all up in yo' area

Causin' mass hysteria!

Specifically HOL-quidditch related...

So many questions, so little time,
Missing “mauve top hat” is such a crime,
Don’t forget numbers twelve and three,
I wonder what the next question will be!

Quidditch practice is usually fun
I know the answers, one by one
But during a game, my brain goes numb
And I wait for them very slowly to come

On a real pitch I’d fly
Fast through the sky
No answers to know
Or words per minute to show

I’d chase down that quaffle
Or maybe the snitch
I’d no longer fly myself
Into the ditch.

I love quidditch, I love the hype
but on the pitch, I just can’t type.
I try to dodge, my fingers glitch.
I type dododge, my teammates twitch.
I think I’m hitting the right keys
but all of it is typoese.
I know you think my typing’s poor -
Just wait until I practice more!

Flying on our broom
We go as high, as the moon

Chasing, Beating, Defending, and Scoring
This Quidditch season won't be boring

Whether chasing or seeking
Perhaps even keeping
The teams do assemble for play

And when balls pass and hopes dash
The teammates they don't clash
We all hope for another day
