2016 SQL: END OF SEASON

Postby Will Lestrange » Thu Sep 08, 2016 5:27 am

The 2016 SQL season has finally come to an end!

QUAFFLE: The 2016 SQL Quaffle championship took place on August 21, with Hot Potato defeating the Zippy Fugitives in a thrilling final. If you want to relive all fourteen Quaffle matches of the summer, then simply look right here for the recaps.

SNITCH: Sixteen prospective Seekers, from all four Houses, took to the Quidditch pitch this summer for the 2016 Seeker tournament. Many were already notorious Seeking legends of past and present, while others had never even seen a regulation Snitch before this summer. A few were even better known for their play with the Quaffle (or with their Beater's bat) than with the type of precision flying needed to catch a Snitch. But what would happen this season? Would we see a third straight final between Matilde Rayne and Will Lestrange? Thankfully (for all involved with possibly two exceptions), the answer was no: in fact, Arielle Lemoyne (best known for beating Scarlet Leslie-Lewis to the Snitch last May) was the only Seeker from last year's semifinals to return to the semifinals this year.

Neither of this year's finalists had even played in the 2015 Seeker tournament, but that doesn't mean that they were new to Snitchplay: Scarlet Leslie-Lewis is possibly the most famous Seeker of the modern era, while Amy Lupin had actually gone undefeated in group play in her most recent Seeker tournament two years back. When pursuing the Snitch, Scarlet is known for a consistent, trivia-focused flying style while Amy favours flashier, riskier play on the pitch. Scarlet earned her berth in the finals by putting an end to Cody Lewis's surprise run; Amy won her spot by beating Arielle Lemoyne to the Snitch.

And so, late one gorgeous Wednesday afternoon in early September, it was time for Amy and Scarlet to face off; the prize: the final Golden Snitch of the tournament. In a mainly Bludger-free match, Scarlet used her trivia prowess to get off to an early lead: snagging the first seven trivia questions of the match and ultimately outscoring Amy 38-4 in trivia. While Amy stayed hot on Scarlet's tail throughout the entire match, it wasn't quite enough to neutralize Scarlet's trivia advantage: Scarlet maneuvered a 5-minute solve to nab the small golden ball by its wing at the 46 minute mark, just before Amy would have picked up the final clue of the match.

This means that Scarlet Leslie-Lewis, who caught the Golden Snitch in all six of her summer matches, won the SQL Snitch Tournament of 2016!

REFEREEING: If you refereed in SQL, either for Quaffle or Snitch, expect 100 beans your way for each match! Thank you to all of the referees this season: Arianna Stonewater, Arielle Lemoyne, Ashley Margaret, Cody Lewis, Darcey Goode, Ivelisse Ada, Matilde Rayne, Rosalie Mason, and Scarlet Leslie-Lewis. Without you, SQL could not have happened!

Thank you all for participating! And another huge thank you to all the refs -- SQL wouldn't have been possible without you.

See you next year!

Thank you to all the officials, referees, and puzzle writers! SQL always reveals hidden talents. I hope to see some of my fellow Wingdings play in their first official matches this upcoming season.
