Fall Term Class Advertisements

Postby Prof. Rorey Padfoot » Fri Aug 07, 2015 7:04 pm

Want to know what classes you should take this term? Craving some more information and what each of the classes have to offer?

You can find out in this thread!

This post will contain information regarding the classes the HOL professors and student teachers are hosting. If you want all of your class information in one go, this is the best place to look!

If you have more questions regarding a certain class, please contact the professor/student teacher. E-mailing your professors or student teachers to see if you can join their class MIGHT make them cranky, so try not to do that. XD

Class List

Interested in learning about the more precise and practical side of magic? Want to have the peace of mind of being able to heal wounds and cure poison without the need to purchase expensive potions from the local potioneer? (Obsessed with the Pottermore Potion-making game?) Don't miss out on this unique and powerful branch of your magical education - be sure to enroll in Potions class this term!

Potions is a one-term class that aims to give you cover the basic knowledge you will need to begin your journey in the incredible world of potion-making. We will be focusing on the basics of potion-making as well as the potions brewed in the first three years of Hogwarts education.

Lesson One: Tools of the Trade
Lesson Two: Common Ingredients & Where to Find Them
Lesson Three: Potions I (E.g. Forgetfulness Potion, Antidote to Common Poisons)
Lesson Four: Potions II (E.g. Hair-raising potion, Swelling Solution)
Lesson Five: Potions III (E.g. Confusing Concoction, Shrinking Solution)

Note that there will be an exam at the end of the year, but it is not mandatory.

This class has an end-of-term deadline. However, there are monthly recommended due dates, for those of you who would like to get points on a monthly basis!

Quill Requirements
You must earn 150 points in order to pass the class and earn a quill. Points can be earned from any combination of assignments and extra credits, but students must complete a homework assignment before they are allowed to attempt the extra credit and earn points from it.

The names of the shiny awards have yet to be determined, but you can earn up to four awards from this class by...
- Earning 240+ points (Exceeds Expectations)
- Being the top points-earner in your house
- Submitting consistently impressive work over the term
- Passing the non-mandatory exam with at least a 70% (21/30)

Check out the class website to get a feel for the lessons and assignments! http://holpotions.weebly.com/
And try not to get my version of potions mixed up with Prof. Kath Snape's Potions for Beginners ;)!

Theory of Charms

Have trouble cleaning your room, brushing your hair, or speaking up in class? Want to have an easier time finding your keys and defending yourself against bullies? Feel like blowing stuff up and making a quick getaway? No magical education would be complete without an understanding of the most fundamental branch of magic there is - charms!

Theory of Charms will focus on learning about the basic theory of charm-work, and then move on to learn about various categories of charms, their incantations, wand movements, and effects. Each lesson will cover one category of charms as follows:
Lesson One: Introduction to Charm-work
Lesson Two: Every-day & Miscellaneous Charms
Lesson Three: Movement & Transportation Charms
Lesson Four: Preventative & Protective Charms
Lesson Five: Duelling & Destructive Charms

Like my potions class, Theory of Charms has an end-of-term deadline with optional monthly due dates for those of you who like points on a monthly basis.

Quill Requirements
In order to pass this class and earn a quill you must earn 150 points and pass the final exam with at least 60% (so 18/30). The final exam points will count toward your total 150 points required to pass the class. Other than the exam, you may complete any combination of homework and extra credit to gain your 150 points.

Shiny Things
You can earn up to three awards in Theory of Charms:
Charming Cheese - For those students who impress me or stand out over the term.
Achievement in Charming - For those students who earn 240+ points (Exceeds Expectations or above)
Charms Consultant - For the student(s) from each House who earn the most points.

Check out the class website (http://holcharmsclass.weebly.com/) to see what the lessons and assignments are like!

I hope to see lots of you in class this term :)!!
Thank you to Prof. Kyrie Adderholt!!

Sorry for the lack of fancy colours and fonts but I'm on my phone and it's too much of a faff!

I just wanted to make a post to let you know that Marvellous Musical Theatre - Act 1 is running for the last time so if you haven't taken it yet this is your last chance. Act 3 will be back next Autumn so there's no rush to take that if it interests you.

Beedle the Bard will also not be running in the Spring Term but may be back in the future, I've not decided yet!

Thanks to everyone who's already signed up, looking forward to a great year :)
