Week 1: Get to the campsite

Postby Kim Alting » Sat Jul 30, 2016 11:39 pm

Welcome to the Wizard Olympics Camp, hosted by HOLLERS and the Department of Magical Games and Sports! To commemorate the 21st Anniversary of the Third Task of the Triwizard Tournament, we have grown a Labyrinth for you to navigate in order to reach the camp site. The Labyrinth is populated by various obstacles and dangers that you will have to overcome so be careful and don’t lose yourself along the way.

Navigate the Labyrinth and overcome each obstacle as you encounter it. Click on the underlined name of the obstacle in order to get the puzzle you must solve. Each puzzle is worth 20 Hoots.
Please send your completed Labyrinth and the puzzle solutions in the order in which you encountered them in a PM (email) to hol.hollers@gmail.com before August 31st, 11:59 pm HOL time.

Acromantula
A gigantic spider steps into your path and all you can see are eight shining black eyes and razor-sharp pincers. Then to your horror, you realize Aragog is not alone – he is accompanied by hundreds (well maybe not hundreds) of his children and you must disarm each and every one of them!

First, unscramble the highlighted letters to reveal the correct defensive spell. Next, disarm each spider by casting a spell in the grid. Each spider is exactly connected to only one spell. A spell can be cast in a horizontally or vertically adjacent square of the spider. Spells are never cast adjacent to each other, neither vertical, not horizontal, not even diagonal. The numbers outside the grid gives the total number of spells in the corresponding row or column. Send us the name of the proper spell and a screenshot of your completed puzzle!

Blast-ended Skrewt
You have run into nothing for ten minutes and find the lack of obstacles to be unnerving. But when you round another corner, you find yourself facing one of Hagrid’s Blast-ended Skrewts! The creature is enormous – it’s ten feet long and looks like a giant scorpion. It issues a blast of fire from its end and singes your hair. You hate the smell of burning hair.

Solve the Sudoku puzzle to reveal the correct incantation of the knockback jinx. Send us the incantation and a screenshot of your completed puzzle!

Bridges
As you leave the danger zone of the Labyrinth, you see a lake with many islands! Take a moment to stop and help the workers build some bridges between the islands so it will be easier to move ahead into the safety zone!

The number on the island represents how many bridges you need to attach to that island. Some islands will probably need multiple bridges between them. You can only go left, right, up or down (no diagonal bridges!). Send us a screenshot of how you connected all the islands!

Dementor
When you turn a corner, you see a Dementor gliding towards you. It must be at least twelve feet tall! Its rotting hands are outstretched, its breath is rattling, and you feel a cold clamminess come over you. But when you cast the Patronus Charm, the Dementor trips and you realize there’s more to this Dementor than meets the eye!

Unscramble the word tiles puzzle to learn more about Dementors and then unscramble the highlighted letters to reveal the correct defensive spell. Send us a screenshot of your completed puzzle and the name of the defensive spell.

Image
Dominoes
You love a good pun and who doesn’t? Arrange the dominoes (no need for flipping) to form a picture and send us the screenshot of the picture!

Image
Sphinx
You think you can make out the camp site in the distance. But a Sphinx is blocking your path and says, “You are very near your goal. The quickest way is past me.” The Sphinx smiles her mysterious smile and offers you a piece of paper. She says, “Find your way through this mini maze and I will let you pass. And as you do, look for some Wizarding Sport terms to get you in the zone for the coming weeks!” Send us a screenshot of your path through the mini maze as well as the words you find along the way!

Image
Werewolf
The Labyrinth is getting darker with every passing minute and the sky overhead is turning a deep navy. The moon slides out from behind a cloud just as you glance up at the sky. You hear the bone-chilling howl right before you turn a corner and see a snarling Werewolf about to attack!

Unscramble the words that are associated with Werewolves and then unscramble the highlighted letters to reveal the correct defensive spell. Send us a screenshot of your completed puzzle and the name of the defensive spell.

If you haven't already noticed, the Werewolf snuck in a new challenge, after the original challenges were posted!

Good luck surviving it.
