October - Dictionary Day

Postby Maxim Trevelyan » Sun Oct 01, 2017 6:32 pm

October 16th marks the birth of Noah Webster, an American lexicographer, and one of the fathers of widely used Merriam-Webster Dictionary.

Did you know that the first dictionary ever was written by Protagoras of Abdera in Ancient Greece, 5th century B.C.? It was a compilation of difficult words that people could encounter in the writings of Homer.

To complete this challenge, I want you to pick your favorite (or random) word from the dictionary and write a poem of any kind about it, at least 10 lines long. Make sure your word, and your poem, abide by all HOL rules.

For 15 Hoots and 15 beans, post your poem as a reply to this thread by October 31st 11:59 PM HOL time at the latest.

(Word used: Sky)

Hi Sky
Sky Hi

Oh can you tell me why
Oh why does the blue bird fly
So high in the sky

Near the sun so hot
Like a hot dot
That shines a lot

Up high
No why?

(Dedicated and helped a little by our wonderful Sky Alton.)

Empower

You gave me strength when I thought I had none left
You showed me hope when I was lost in the dark
A light that flickered for a short while
and suddenly burst into a brilliant flame

Motivation soared as you dried my tears
I felt something bubbling within
Confidence grew where at once there was none
and I knew I would make it in the end

You empowered me to empower myself
And I want to share that gift with the world
To know your own worth is something grand
I am proud of who I am and I will no longer lock it away

Fresh

Fresh as a drop
of dew
on a sparkly leaf

Fresh as I wish
for you
to be
watching you leave

Leave me alone
as dry as a bone
For you took my freshness
you left me breathless
while you aimed to enter
your paradise

You will see herbs and plants and trees
you will taste fruits, fly overseas
stand in the breeze
as you with ease
forget me and my sacrifice

My FAVORITE word is Persnickety!!!

Oh persnickety
You speak to my very soul
How I love you so

A wonderful word
You are so much fun to say
There are none better

In terms of details
I will disagree with you
ALL details matter

Regardless of that
You always bring a smile
to my silly face
