May - National Limerick Day

Postby Maxim Trevelyan » Mon May 01, 2017 12:05 am

Observed on May 12, National Limerick Day celebrates the birthday of English poet Edward Lear, known mostly for his literary nonsense in poetry, prose and limericks.

Did you know that this poetry style’s name comes from being first observed in city of Limerick, Ireland?

A limerick is a very short, humorous, nonsense poem. Within a limerick, there are five lines. The first two lines rhyme with the fifth line and the third and fourth line rhyme together (AABBA rhyming scheme).

Limericks must be of your own creation and all normal HOL rules apply.

For Quidditch Tarma has a knack,
beware of her bludger at your back.
Distract her with coffee,
or a blueberry toffee,
so you have a chance for Quaffle attack.

For 15 Hoots and 15 beans, post your limerick as a reply to this thread by May 31st 11:59 PM HOL time at the latest.

There once was a puppy named Sandy
Who wanted to eat cotton candy
She gave it a lick
but then she got sick
She complained: this is not fine and dandy!

When it's National Limerick Day
We should cheer for A-A-B-B-A.
It's the verse I favor
And I'll never waver.
But I just wish I had more to say.

there once was a young dragon who was bored
there was nothing to play with in his hoard!
To his mother he complained
Chores she did Arrange
Other options he wished he had explored.

Pralines are a sweet well known as a treat
Delicious and tasty they just can't be beat
So how did Elise
Cover eyes with the fleece
And get that as nickname, instead of 'Nutmeat'?

Limericks always make me smile
Prompting feelings free of guile
I've tried my hand
But it could not stand
For I always tend to write a mile

It's finally the last week of school
And I can go sit by the pool
But perhaps not
Until it gets hot
Still, summer vacation is cool
