I know I'm only supposed to pick one quote, but the book I picked up is an authentic gold mine when it comes to this particular topic.
Here are three sentences, in the order in which I found them:

From Shipwrecks by Akira Yoshimura:
• Inside, the old women of the village chanted sutras in hushed voices.

• The sea was growing angry under the bright red sky.
