Week 5 - Cascade

Postby Matilde Rayne » Mon Sep 28, 2015 2:35 am

This week, we'll be moving away from traditional broom games and heading into experimental territory. On the upside, there won't be any falling boulders, fire, backwards flying, or inflated bladders to worry about this week. On the other hand, there hasn't been much time for testing, so let's all just keep our fingers crossed that nothing goes wrong.

Cascade is a new game designed by HOL's very own Prof. Scarlet Leslie-Lewis! She's in the process of proposing this new game, which is a test of both skill and luck, to the Department of Magical Games and Sports for official recognition. The game itself involves playing in randomized weather conditions (controlled by sideline officials casting weather spells); one minute players could be flying in clear conditions, and the next minute flying through a deluge of rain, and so on. Scoring is fairly basic, involving tossing a ball through one of a set of hoops. The tricky part is, even though there are multiple hoops, only one hoop counts for scoring, and this designation switches between all of the hoops at random intervals throughout the game!

For the IRC version of Cascade, we'll be botting using a qset where each "question" has multiple correct answers; the catch is, the bot will only accept one of the answers randomly. So if the prompt that appears asks for a "Quidditch position" - chaser, beater, keeper, and seeker all correctly answer that prompt, and you'll need to guess which one the bot wants in that situation. If your first guess doesn't work, keep trying until someone gets it! Depending on how many people show up, we may split into either pairs or small groups to bot using the Cascade qset.

If you need any help getting on IRC, feel free to send Arielle or Mattie a message and we'd be happy to help you get you started!

As ever, all participants will receive beans from this week's sponsors. If you're interested in sponsoring this week, please send a message to Arielle and/or Mattie, letting us know the name you would like to donate in and the number of beans you want to contribute for the week!

The dates for Cascade are:

1. Saturday October 3 at 2 am HOL time / Friday October 2 at 9 pm EST
2. Saturday October 3 at 9 pm HOL time / Saturday October 3 at 4 pm EST

If you are interested in playing, sign up below! Please include whether you expect to come for Match 1, Match 2, or both!

Thanks to our sponsors, each player will receive 300 beans!

In Cascade, our new broomstick game filled with random twists and turns, we had several random match-ups!

At our first match, we started with two group challenges - the first challenge resulted in a tie between Will Lestrange and Cody Lewis, and the second challenge was won by Scarlet Leslie-Lewis! We finished up with several 1v1 matches
Cody v. Ive
Hope v. BJ
Tarma v Aly
Will v. Scarlet
Ashley v. Kyrie

At our second match we started with group challenges as well - our winners were Will Lestrange, and Maxim Trevelyn! Again, we had some 1v1 matches:
Ashley v. Will
Thomas v. Maxim
Leonie v. Kim
Tarma v. Kaiwa
And in a final round with all participants, Will Lestrange was the winner!

Well done to everyone who played this week!

Once again, we'd like to show our appreciation for this week's sponsors:
