Today we had the first pickup session of the academic year, and it was a rousing success... with every house well-represented!

We began by getting out our cauldrons for a quick game of Creaothceann, and then we decided to divide into teams by discussing our favorite types of weather. While no one liked "wet" weather, people's weather preferences divided approximately evenly between "hot" (or warm, at least) and "windy". With everyone set up into place, it was time to release the Quod for three exciting games of Quodpot!

The first game took place using the regular set. The Hot team got off to a quick 3-0 lead on the first three questions, but the third of those involved Will exploding on the mere sound of Hermione's bossy voice. The next set of questions saw Tarma tie the score, Emma putting Hot back in the lead, and Tarma reclaiming the lead for the Windy side before the Quod said "I regret it" while exploding on nobody in particular. Three questions later, with the score tied up at 8, Eno exploded on a swallowed fish bone. The lead switched hands two more times (thanks to goals by Emma and Patrick) but then came two straight explosions: Tarma was exploded by the Charms corridor and Katelin found a nest of dead puffskeins exploding at her, while Kendra (on Team Hot) had to fly off the pitch. The next six questions would be answered by Team Windy, letting Pat and Kathren extend their lead to 19-9, but one of those questions saw Kathren defeated to an exploding dustbin. Emma finally broke their streak on the number zero, only to find an exploding Quod giving the victory to Team Windy, 19-9.

Before the second game, Pat (whose weather preferences were right on the border between 'hot' and 'windy') switched over to Team Hot and Scarlet also flew onto the pitch to support that team. Oh, and we switched question sets too - moving onto the randomness of the "Cascade" set. Tarma got the first question of the match for Team Windy, giving them a quick 1-0 lead, but then Will and Emma divided the next 3 questions between them to put the Hot team up ahead 9-1 before the Quod exploded harmlessly in the shape of a Parkin's Pincer. Two questions later, Will exploded holding a Quod from which steam rising in spirals was observed. Five questions later Eno exploded thanks to his canon housemate Ginny Weasley (who wasn't even playing that day), followed by a harmless explosion two questions later that had everyone saying "Balderdash"! (At that point, the Hot team was up 15-5). Four questions later, with the score now 18-8, Tarma was exploded by a statue of Boris the Bewildered; this would be followed by Scarlet facing an explosion from the Irish Beater Connolly (seeking revenge from the summer before last) on the very next question. Pat would get knocked out by George Weasley four questions later, followed a continuation of the tradition of "explosive Gryffindors" when Lupin would cause another Quod to explode harmlessly on the very next question. Five questions later, as Kathren had to fly off the pitch, Katelin got exploded by Cho Chang. At this point, there were only two players standing: Emma of Team Hot and Vanessa of Team Windy (who was just about to fly back onto the pitch), with Hot clinging to a 20-14 lead. Seventeen questions later, with Vanessa having narrowed that lead down to 27-23, it was time for her to encounter a werewolf, Fenrir Greback, knocking her out from the game and making the final score 27-23 in favor of Hot.

Finally it was time for the third game, with Pat back on the Windy side! Will got knocked out on the very first question thanks to an explosive game of Shuntbumps, followed by The Unexpected Task getting out Scarlet on the very next question. With the next three questions split between the teams and the fourth question unanswered, Emma would succumb to surprisingly explosive asphodel. While the score was tied 3-3, things did not look good for Team Hot; they only had Eno remaining while the Windy team had all of their players still in the game. Nevertheless, Eno used Ron Weasley to get Team Hot their first lead of the game, 4-3, on the next question, following by Tarma exploding in a very Dreadful pattern. The next five questions were either answered by a Windy player (namely Pat or Katelin) or unanswered, giving the Windy team an 11-4 lead. After another five questions (only one would be answered, by Katelin), Eno would be exploded in front of some fairy lights to end the game (final score: 12-4, in favor of Team Windy).

The following people showed up: Emma Borg, Eno Thomas, Katelin Ross, Kathren Johnsun, Kendra Givens, Patrick James, Scarlet Leslie-Lewis, Tarma Amelia Black, Vanessa Tilley, and Will Lestrange!

The next pickup will be in about a week and a half, on...

Tonight it was time for the second pickup session of the year, and even if the turnout wasn't quite as impressive as last time's, it was still filled with all sorts of excitement and explosions!

We began by testing the limits of the bots with the botting racing game known as Xany (if you're one of the first three people to answer a question correct, you get points). We played two versions of the game: one with the regular question set and one with the Cascade set.

Then, it was time to divide into teams... and we noticed that the three people with the longest names had their IRC nicknames aligned perfectly into seven-letter blocks. So they formed one team, the "Long" named team - and everyone else ended up on the "Short" named team. As usual, it was now time to release the Quod!

The first Quodpot game involved the regular question set. Will got exploded on the first question, despite being fully three feet away from the pot (while everyone else was within eighteen inches). After Scarlet gave the Long team a lead from the safe distance of 100 yards, Sirius answered three questions in a row... but the last one caused an explosion thanks to Penelope Clearwater of Ravenclaw (but not before giving the Short team a 5-1 lead). Scarlet exploded on the very next question thanks to The Tale of The Three Brothers (which the bot thought was "The Tale of Three Brothers"). Five questions later, Katelin was exploded by the ghost of Nearly Headless Nick; when Tarma exploded on the very next question in a shower of gold, Short now clung to a 7-2 lead with only Kathren left on the field (on behalf of Long). Two questions later, though, the Quod had apparently known magic ("it has known magic') of the type that involved explosions, making the final score 7-3 on behalf of the Short team.

We switched to the Cascade set and, for the first time in a while, Will wasn't the first person exploded! In fact, the first four questions were split between Will and Kathren - but the fourth question, thanks to "caput draconis" (a dragon's head, apparently), exploded on Kathren with the score tied 3-3. Will would explode three questions later at The House of Gaunt, followed by Scarlet meeting her match on the very next question in the form of her old captain Marcus Flint. Three questions later, with the Short team leading 7-5, it was Sirius who fell at the hands of The Wandmaker... and Tarma and Katelin were the only two players left standing. Over the next six questions, I was actually accused of being present at the Ministry of Magic in 1996 (despite the fact that Will Lestrange wouldn't even be born for another five years)... but the game actually ended at the Ministry of Magic, where Katelin exploded - giving Short a 12-5 victory.

Just like the second game, the third game began with a fourth-question explosion: this time Will would fall to former GQT captain Harry Potter (though the Short team now had a 5-1 lead). Scarlet then swept the next four questions, giving the Long team an 11-5 lead, followed by a Quaffle exploding in the form of the goblin Ragnok, safely away from the pitch (while everyone tried to speak Gobbledegook instead). Five questions later, Tarma was the victim of The Woes of Mrs. Weasley, with the score 14-6 in favor of Long. When Scarlet was knocked out by a troll two questions later, each team again had one person standing: Kathren from Long (trying to protect a 15-6 lead) and Sirius from Short (trying to come back from the deficit). But Sirius was exploded on the very next question thanks to a Tongue-Tying Curse (Langlock), with the final score 15-6 in favor of Short.

There was just enough time for one more match... and it was the most exciting of all, with nearly half of the questions being bludgers! Will got the first two questions, but the second one was The Mirror of Erised, which was somehow exploding (apparently the deepest, most desperate desire of SOMEONE'S heart was to see me explode early ;)). Two questions later, the Gorodok Gargoyles exploded the Quod, but since no one was flying anywhere near Lithuania no one was knocked out (the score was tied 1-1 at that point). Two questions later, Tarma was flying over Togo when the Tchamba Charmers knocked her off the pitch, leaving Sirius (who had just given the Short team a 2-1 lead) the only representative of his team on the pitch. After Scarlet answered two questions to give the Long team their first lead of the match, 4-2, Kathren was knocked out by her own House's Seeker, Cho Chang. Three questions later, with the score 5-4 in favor of Long, Scarlet would be knocked out by a Gryffindor captain: Angelina Johnson - leaving Katelin as the last person standing on her team. Of the next four questions, two would be answered by Sirius and two would be unanswered... but the last of those questions involved Sirius getting exploded by RQT rival Bradley, with the score knotted at 5. All the long team needed was one more question to win the match, but the very next question would see Katelin exploded by yet another RQT rival, Chambers, to end the match at 5-5 with EVERYONE having collapsed on the pitch from explosions. (For those playing the home game, there were SEVEN explosions out of sixteen questions in the final game)!

The following people showed up: Katelin Ross, Kathren Johnsun, Scarlet Leslie-Lewis, Sirius Fudge, Tarma Amelia Black, and Will Lestrange!

The next pickup will be in about a week and a half, on...

Today it was time for the third pickup of the season! The turnout count wasn't the greatest, but we still had lots of fun nonetheless - and a smaller crowd allowed us to complete more games!

We began with three rounds of Xany: in between our standard rounds with the regular question set and the Cascade set, we had a round with a question set where the answers were only numbers and years!

At that point, there were four people standing: we divided them into HOL graduates and non-graduates to get even teams of two each. Then, of course, it was time to release the Quod for some games!

The first game began with Will knocked out on the first question by the small parasite known as a Chizpurfle. Tarma got three of the next four questions (in between there was one whose answer was "Large, rather clumsily made of what looked like gold, set with a heavy black stone that had cracked down the middle" which went uncaptured); unfortunately for her, the last one of those, "on the edge of the Forbidden Forest", proved Tarma's demise. After Sirius answered a question to extend the Graduates' lead to 5-0, Molly got exploded by a trio of items: a Sneakoscope, a Secrecy Sensor, and a Foe-Glass giving the match to the Graduates, 5-0.

The next match moved to the years set: while Will got the Non-Graduates out to a 6-0 lead three questions in, the next two questions went unanswered - followed by an explosion on the sixth question, knocking Will all the way back to 382 BC! Tarma was "cushioned" out of the game three questions later in 1820, but not before narrowing the lead to 6-3. The very next question saw Sirius knocked back to 1709 thanks to dragon breeding... leaving the Non-Graduates as the winners, 6-3.

We then switched sets again to the Cascade set: how would that change the match? After Will and Molly split the first three questions to give the Non-Graduates another 6-0 lead, Tarma exploded on the fourth question thanks to Fred Weasley. Four questions later, Will succumbed to scenes of terror at the Quidditch World Cup, with the Non-Graduates now up 10-0. That was the final score, though, as Sirius exploded on the very next question at St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries!

There was time for two more matches, which would prove to be the most exciting matches of the evening. The fourth match began with Will exploding on the very first question due to his own beater, Bole, throwing a wayward Bludger/Quod his way. Molly then answered the next two to give the Non-Graduates a 3-0 lead, but Tarma and Sirius answered the two after that to swing the match in the Graduates' favor, 7-3. Two of the next three questions involved explosions; while everyone stayed away from Amycus Carrow, the Unexpected Task was (unfortunately for Sirius) "get exploded by a Quod". Two questions later, Molly tied the score back at 7-7, but Tarma Imperioed her team back in the lead, 10-7, on the next question, before exploding one question later at the Lightning-Struck Tower. Molly was the last person standing; could she reclaim the lead? Although she narrowed the lead to 10-8 in the next question, she waited out the five questions after that... only to finally explode thanks to Aragog the Acromantula! The Graduates therefore won, 10-8.

The final match of the night looked like the Non-Graduates would run away with it, earning the first fifteen points of the match. Even though Molly was the first person exploded, thanks to the RQT captain Roger Davies four questions in, Tarma would be exploded four questions thanks to Dobby's "Reward" (apparently Dobby didn't graduate from Hogwarts either). Three questions after that, Will finally exploded thanks to a Hungarian Horntail dragon - which meant it was up to Sirius to see if he could erase a 15-0 lead. Over the next eight questions, he managed to narrow the gap to 15-12; with the next question potentially worth four points, he now had a 50/50 chance of winning the game on the next question. Unfortunately for him, the Chaser position exploded right in his face, giving the final match of the evening to the Non-Graduates, 15-12!

The following people showed up: Emma Borg, Molly Grabau, Scarlet Leslie-Lewis, Sirius Fudge, Tarma Amelia Black, and Will Lestrange!

The next pickup will be in about a week and a half, on...

Last week we all met on the pitch for another pickup! This time, we had all four houses represented - including some new players!

We began by getting out our cauldrons for two rounds of Creaothceann; one with the regular set and one with the Cascade set. Then we asked everyone to pick a number; the smaller numbers were on one team and the larger numbers were on the other (I chose the imaginary number 'i', which was the smallest of the lot...)

Although the first question was answered smoothly, the next two questions both led to explosions; Scarlet ran into exploding gillywater and then Will got knocked out due to Harry Potter being lovesick over Ginny Weasley. And just like that, the Small team lost half its players - with just a single point to show for it. Sirius got the next two questions, but the second of those - serving drinks and cleaning the house - got him out too. So now, despite the Small team answering all of the first five questions correct, they only had Gwen standing, and only had a 2-0 lead. Seven questions later saw the first explosion of the Large team: Tarma fell to Roonil Wazlib, though the Large team now had a 6-2 lead. Three questions later saw Katelin fall to a treacherous bleeder; five questions after that, Pat fell on the number 2, and three questions after that, Kathren succumbed to Bertha Jorkins. At that point, the question on everyone's mind was... can Gwen erase a 15-2 lead all by herself? Eight questions later (the final answer was 'pristine') the answer was... YES! Gwen scored the final seventeen points of the match to win for the Small team, 19-15.

Now we switched to the Cascade set for another round. This time, Will fell on the very first question to Magical Drafts and Potions. Scarlet got the next two questions, but the second involved Rita Skeeter exploding her. The next two questions went to Sirius, ending with Arabella Figg getting her. So far the two games began nearly identically... five questions answered by Team Short, but three explosions caused Gwen to be the last one standing - with only a 2-0 lead. Four questions later, with Team Short up 4-1, Kathren was defeated by Cadmus. Ollivander exploded Pat (possibly with a temperamental wand) on the very next question; three questions later, Vaisey got Tarma - and Team Short still had a 4-3 lead. Each team had only one player left: who would survive? Seventeen questions later (after numerous explosions were dodged), a locket exploded Katelin - but not before her team made it up to a 15-5 lead. Once again, it was up to see if Gwen could close the gap. Nine questions later, Gwen had narrowed the lead to 15-10... but then she exploded on a boar, giving this one to the Large team.

There was time for one last round: this one began a little differently - with no explosions until the fifth question, when Tarma fell due to Mayhem at the Ministry, and the Small team already had an 8-0 lead. Two questions later, Pat got knocked out by Alastor Moody; four questions later, Will got Obliviated... err... exploded... by Magical Me - but the Small team was up 15-0 and had the numerical advantage in players too. Seven questions later, Sirius got exploded by Narcissa (this was not an attack of cousins); two questions later, Katelin finally put the Large team on the board with some Latin ('quid agis'), though the score was still 23-2. Three questions after that, with the score now 30-2, Katelin was exploded by the Woollongong Warriors; after the next three questions were split by the remaining members of the Small team, Gwen and Scarlet, the score stood at 36-2 before Kathren, the last player on Large, had to fly off the pitch. And that ended up being the final score!

The following people showed up: Gwenevier Winters, Katelin Ross, Kathren Johnsun, Patrick James, Scarlet Leslie-Lewis, Sirius Fudge, Tarma Amelia Black, and Will Lestrange!

The next pickup will be in about a week and a half, on a different time and place than normal...

Re: 2018-2019 Quidditch Pickups Thread!

Post by Will Lestrange » Mon Nov 05, 2018 2:07 am

This evening, we had the first pickup in November... all four houses were represented and we even got to introduce a new player to the Quod!

We began with two different "Xany" races (the first three to answer score points): one with the regular set (possibly the most exciting Xany race I have ever experienced) and one with the special Cascade set.

Then it was time to divide into teams before breaking out the Quod: everyone was asked to name a magical creature - some were rated XXXXX and others weren't. That was how we divided our teams: FiveX versus OneToFourX.

The first game was played with the regular set - and everyone was surprised at how docile the Quod was. It took fourteen questions before anyone was exploded (Scarlet - for the FiveX team - thanks to Nymphadora Tonks). At that point, the FiveX team had a 20-2 lead. Seven questions later, Professor McGonagall exploded Tarma of the OneToFourX team as the score now read 29-2. And then the Quod returned to its usual ways, with Will exploding on the very next question thanks to a Remedial Potions class going wrong. At this point, the FiveX team only had Sirius left while the OneToFourX team featured Katelin, Rowan, and Alex. The Quod became docile again after those consecutive explosions: it took another twelve questions before the next explosion of a player - Sirius was exploded by Durmstrang. Katelin, Rowan, and Alex were the only three left on the pitch, but could they erase a 41-5 lead? After a Portable Swamp went unanswered, Katelin got the next three questions... but the last one involved a Creaothceann cauldron knocking her back to the year 1762, with the score only narrowed to 41-10. Three questions later Rowan was exploded by her housemate Katie Bell, and three questions after that Alex was exploded by an "aparecium" incantation. Final score: FiveX 41, OneToFourX 14.

We then switched onto the Cascade set for the next match as Cody flew onto the pitch riding a phoenix... but the Phoenix's XXXX rating caused us to reclassify all XX rated creatures, such as Bowtruckles, as honorary XXXXX creatures for the purpose of team balance. This meant Katelin would switch onto the FiveX team. But what would happen to the Quod? Would the new set make it as explosive as we remembered it from past matches... or would it stay as docile as it was for most of last match? Four questions later, we got our answer when Cody was knocked out by a Swedish Short-Snout dragon (FiveX was up 5-0 at that point). Three questions later, with the score 6-2, Will would fall thanks to Errol. The next question would see Luna Lovegood explode Rowan; two questions after that Tarma would fall to an unnamed "The Wandmaker". At this point, the FiveX team now had the advantage in players: Katelin, Sirius, and Scarlet were still on the pitch - while the OneX team only had Alex left. The next four questions would be split between the two teams, but because Alex got the two most valuable of them, he managed to tie the score 9-9. After the Quod exploded harmlessly on a dragon, Sirius reclaimed the lead for his team, 10-9, via Magical Law Enforcement... only to succumb to his predecessor as Hufflepuff Seeker, Prefect, and Triwizard Champion... Cedric Diggory - in what would turn out to be the first of FOUR CONSECUTIVE Quod explosions! (For those playing the home game, the probability of a given Quod explosion being the first of four consecutive ones is 0.8 percent.) That's right: after a harmless explosion on Armand Malfoy, Scarlet would be exploded by Nymphadora Tonks (what's up with these explosive Hufflepuffs on the pitch?) and Alex would fall to The Lost Prophecy, ending the game 10-9.

We then flew back onto the pitch for a third match with the Cascade set. This time, the Quod started out even more explosive than before: Will was exploded by a lethifold on the third question of the match! (Brabas, I know you don't want to snuggle anymore because of 'switching from silver to green'... but do you HAVE to get back at me with an explosion? ;)) Cody would get the next two questions, but that would only narrow the lead from 2-0 to 2-1 as recklessness would explode him... literally! The next question saw Tarma succumb to exploding Boomslang skin, followed by Sirius being a casualty of Rita Skeeter's (explosive) Scoop. We had three explosions in a row... would there be a fourth? Surprisingly, no - as the cockroach cluster provided Scarlet with a third point for the FiveX team. Two questions after that, though, with the score at 5-1, Rowan would be knocked out by his housemate Harry Potter. The next question saw Scarlet knocked out by Sirius Black - and now each team only had one player left: Katelin for FiveX and Alex for OneToFourX. Alex would get the next two questions, but because of an explosive Abraxan horse, he couldn't do any more than close the gap to 5-2.

Noting that each game so far had featured an increasingly more explosive Quod, we lined up for one last game to see if a fourth game would be even more exciting than before. And we weren't disappointed! Three questions in, with OneToFourX leading 2-1, Tarma would be exploded by Hagrid's Tale. Will would get the next two questions: tying the score before exploding on a holly wand. Two questions after that, with Scarlet having given FiveX the lead back (3-2), Cody would be exploded by Fleur Delacour (did she forget who had helped lead Beauxbatons to victory one summer in the semi-distant past?) with Rowan exploded by unicorn hair three questions after that. (In the two questions before that, Rowan had tied the score at 3 and Scarlet had given FiveX the lead back.) Two questions later, with the score at 6-3 after a Sirius point, the game ended thanks to Godric's Hollow exploding on Alex. And that's how the game ended!

The following people showed up: Alexander Brighton, Cody Lewis, Katelin Ross, Rowan Wildsmith, Scarlet Leslie-Lewis, Sirius Fudge, Tarma Amelia Black, and Will Lestrange!

The next pickup will be in about a week and a half, in our normal 'weekday night' slot...
