Revival of Quidditch Pickups

Postby Will Lestrange » Sat Oct 15, 2016 5:36 pm

NAPS was great when it was around, but... there hasn't been a pickup game in #quidditch for a few months now, and I know at least a few people are looking/waiting for one!

Everyone interested in a pickup Quidditch game: let's meet in #quidditch on Sunday, October 23 at 10:30 PM HOL. (Depending on turnout and demand, this can easily become a regular event again!)

(PS: If this particular time slot is bad for you but you're still interested in pickups, let me know what times are better so we can have better turnout at future ones!)

Normally that time is good for me, just not this month :(

But I'm definitely interested!

We had a pretty good turnout this time! Seven people showed up, from three different houses:

Prof. Arielle Lemoyne
Darcey Goode
Katelin Ross
Matilde Rayne
Pavel Lagrange
Prof. Scarlet Leslie-Lewis
Will Lestrange

and we got two Quaffle games in!

Let's have another pickup session next week, meeting in #quidditch at a slightly different time:
Sunday, October 30 at 10 PM HOL!

NOTE ON TIME ZONES FOR NEXT SUNDAY'S PICKUP MATCH

In Europe, clocks "fall back" from summer time to winter time on October 30th at 2 AM HOL. Because HOL follows UK time, 2 AM HOL *immediately* becomes 1 AM HOL on that day.
In the United States, we remain on daylight saving time for another week, until early morning on November 6.

So, what does this mean for next Sunday's pickup Quidditch match?

We're meeting in #quidditch at 10 PM HOL on October 30, which equals the following time in several common time zones (the time differences may different from what you're used to):

-California/West Coast US (Pacific): 3 PM
-Virginia/East Coast US (Eastern): 6 PM
-London (GMT): 10 PM
-Most of Continental Europe (CET): 11 PM
-India (IST): 3:30 AM on October 31
-China/much of East Asia (UTC+8): 6 AM on October 31

Hope to see you on the pitch!

We had an awesome turnout this time - even better than last week! Eight people showed up, from three different houses:

Prof. Arielle Lemoyne
Ashley Margaret
Bull Johnson
Katelin Ross
Matilde Rayne
Pavel Lagrange
Prof. Scarlet Leslie-Lewis
Will Lestrange

and - despite a bit of a hiccup with team tags (for future reference: it's a bad idea to have a tag contained in another tag, no matter HOW awesome "P vs NP" looks), we got in a CAB duel and two Quaffle games!

Next week, we're going with "same time, same place" for the pickup, meeting in #quidditch at the following time:
Sunday, November 6 at 10 PM HOL!

(NOTE: November 6 is immediately after the US changes their clocks back, so 10 PM HOL will be 5 PM on the East Coast and 2 PM on the West Coast. If you're in Europe or Asia, the time zone guide from last week still applies.)

Today we had a fun round of NAPS, though the turnout went down a bit. The following people played today:

Prof. Arielle Lemoyne
Gail Allen
Matilde Rayne
Pavel Lagrange
Prof. Scarlet Leslie-Lewis
Will Lestrange

We tried to start with a game of Creaothceann, but the rocks refused to enter into the cauldrons. We switched to playing with the Quaffle, and got two matches in! (The professors put up a valiant fight, but couldn't *quite* close out a win against the students....)

Next week, we're changing the time a bit to see what works better, meeting in #quidditch at the following time:
Sunday, November 13 at 11 PM HOL!

Last Sunday we finally got our boulders to agree to fall into our cauldrons! We had an interesting round of NAPS, with people from three houses showing up. The following people played:

Bull J. Johnson
Katelin Ross
Matilde Rayne
Prof. Scarlet Leslie-Lewis
Will Lestrange

We started with a game of Creaothceann. We then played a bit with the Quaffle, and finished up with a bit of broom racing!

Based on popular demand, we're shifting the date and time next week. We'll be meeting in #quidditch at the following time:
Wednesday, November 23 at 2:30 AM HOL!
(NOTE that this is Tuesday, November 22 in US time zones.)

ALSO: If you haven't weighed in HERE with your preferences for pickup scheduling, you're missing out!

Remember that our next Quidditch pickup is on a nonstandard date and time:

Wednesday, November 23 at 2:30 AM HOL!

For Americans, that time is TOMORROW EVENING.

For Europeans (or South Africans), that time is VERY EARLY TOMORROW MORNING.

And for those in East Asia or Oceania, that time is TOMORROW AROUND NOON.

Hope to see you in #quidditch!

Last night on the pitch, for the first time this season we had someone from each House! The following people played:

Bull J. Johnson
Gail Allen
Katelin Ross
Patrick James
Prof. Tarma Amelia Black
Will Lestrange

We started with a game of CAB ("battle of the sexes edition"). We then had a round with the Quaffle: everyone got a few great answers!

Our next pickup will be back in the "Sunday evening" timeslot, a week and a half from now. We'll be meeting in #quidditch at the following time:
Sunday, December 4 at 10 PM HOL!
(NOTE: If this timeslot ends up overlapping with a regular season match, we will delay the pickup by 30-60 minutes to allow that match to finish.)

ALSO: If you haven't weighed in HERE with your preferences for pickup scheduling, you're missing out!

This evening gave us our best turnout yet: for the second time in a row each house was represented! The following people played:

Bull J. Johnson
Prof. Cody Lewis
Katelin Ross
Maxim Trevelyan
Patrick James
Pavel Lagrange
Prof. Scarlet Leslie Lewis
Prof. Tarma Amelia Black
Will Lestrange

We divided into teams by choosing animals; the teams were "land" vs "water" (with air creatures divided between the two realms as needed to balance teams). We began with a lively game of Quodpot (our Killer Whale exploded out of the game on the first question) before moving to a Quaffle game, but with a twist... instead of our usual practice of using a bot as our Quaffle referee, Maxim agreed to be the referee for the match!

Our next pickup will be back in the "midweek night" timeslot, nine days from now. We'll be meeting in #quidditch at the following time:
Wednesday, December 14 at 2:30 AM HOL!
(NOTE: This is Tuesday evening in US time zones.)

Last evening, even though one house was missing, we still had a solid turnout and some new blood! The following people played:

Prof. Arielle Lemoyne
Aurelia West
Prof. Cody Lewis
Gail Allen
Katelin Ross
Prof. Scarlet Leslie Lewis
Prof. Tarma Amelia Black
Will Lestrange

At the start of the pickup session, we realized that half the team had handles beginning with the letter "A", so we made our teams "A" vs "B-Z". We began with two rounds of "CAB" (which is essentially 1-on-1 questions where the players are chosen at random): one with the regular question set, and one with a special question set designed for the game of "Cascade" (which was introduced just last year) before playing one of the closest Quaffle games seen this season.

To get around the holidays, we'll be going with "midweek night" again for our next pickup. We'll be meeting in #quidditch in just under two weeks: on
Wednesday, December 28 at 2:30 AM HOL!

This evening, despite the bustle and excitement of the holidays, we still managed to have every house represented! The following people played:

Prof. Arielle Lemoyne
Patrick James
Prof. Scarlet Leslie-Lewis
Prof. Tarma Amelia Black
Will Lestrange

This time, we decided to go with a "battle of the sexes" theme: two rounds of "CAB" (one "quick draw" round where all questions have answers of three words or less, and one normal round) and one round of Quaffle.

We're returning to our normal schedule after today. In particular, we will next meet in #quidditch within the week: on
Sunday, January 1 at 10 PM HOL!

Upon reflection, evening on New Year's Day might not have been the best time for a Quidditch pickup, though. We still had some fun, though - and the following people turned up...

Aurelia West
Darcey Goode
Maxim Trevelyan
Will Lestrange

We began with a round of "monarch" (which is a decent simulation of free-for-all chasing: everyone can answer every question but if you don't have possession, your next correct answer only gives you possession, not the goal) and then played around with the Quaffle for a bit.

Our next pickup will be in a bit over a week - shortly before THREE exciting House Cup matches will take place over a nine day period. In particular, we will next meet in #quidditch within the week: on
Wednesday, January 11 at 2:30 AM HOL!

Last Tuesday evening (Wednesday early morning HOL turnout) didn't have the best turnout ever, but each house was still represented! The following people showed up:

Prof. Arielle Lemoyne
Patrick James
Prof. Tarma Amelia Black
Will Lestrange

We began with some rounds of "xany" (a game where the first three people to answer a given trivia question get credit for it), played around with the Quaffle in a "students vs professors" match, and finished up with a round of "horse" (where it doesn't matter how fast you type the answer as long as you know it in under 30 seconds).

Our next pickup will be at a slightly unusual time for a pickup because of multiple reschedules of matches. We will next meet in #quidditch a week from Sunday... on
Saturday, January 21 at 10 PM HOL!

In our first Saturday pickup this season, we got a somewhat different crowd than before - though not as many houses were represented as we would have liked. The following people showed up:

Aurelia West
Marcie Hobber
Maxim Trevelyan
Meredith Malkins
Prof. Scarlet Leslie-Lewis
Will Lestrange

We managed to get THREE different broom games in: first we strapped cauldrons on our heads for a round of Creaothceann, then we divided into teams for some Quodpot, and finally the Quaffle came out for some Quiddiitch. The games were all exciting, even with me constantly falling off of my broom (some could argue this made the games MORE exciting ;))!

Our next pickup will be at the usual "midweek evening" time slot, and it may not even be in the same month for everyone playing. We will be meeting in #quidditch on...

Quidditch pickup sessions are often times to experiment and try things out before risking embarrassment or failure in a regular season game, and today's pickup was no exception. First off, though: we had people from each house show up! The following five people played:

Prof. Arielle Lemoyne
Bull J. Johnson
Patrick James
Prof. Tarma Amelia Black
Will Lestrange

We started out with two quick rounds of "xany" (remember: that's the game where three people earn points for each question!) and then shifted into Quaffle play, but with a twist: for the first time in my life, I was flying not as a player, but as a referee! The game managed to go off with minimal controversy, even if the Snitch fell into a black hole at the end of the match.

Because it worked so well last time, our next pickup will be on a Saturday in a week and a half. We will be meeting in #quidditch on...

This pickup didn't quite have the mix of houses I would have liked, but we still had fun! The following people showed up:

Maxim Trevelyan
Prof. Tarma Amelia Black
Sirius Fudge
Will Lestrange

For once, we put the Quaffle away. Instead, we started by strapping cauldrons on our heads for a lively game of Creaothceann; then the Quod came into play for three separate rounds of Quodpot with a different question set each round! (The last one was Scarlet's infamous "Cascade" set, where even the correctness of the answers are completely random.)

Our next pickup will be in a week and a half, at a slightly different time than normal. We will be meeting in #quidditch on...

This evening's pickup was later than usual. Although it started out very slow, it picked up with a nice mix of people, including a brand new player (with 3 houses represented!) The following people showed up:

Aurelia West
Katelin Ross
Keith Mauldin
Patrick James
Prof. Scarlet Leslie-Lewis
Prof. Tarma Amelia Black
Will Lestrange

In our second straight Quaffle-free pickup, we started again with cauldrons on our heads for Creaothceann. Then we switched to facing off against each other in a series of 1v1s: transitioning from "students vs professors" to "boys vs girls" over a series of three quick matches. Everyone who showed up for this part of the evening managed to steal at least one hit!

Our next pickup will be in a week and a half, returning to a Saturday timeslot that has proved successful. We will be meeting in #quidditch on...

Today's pickups had a slightly different assortment of players than usual, and the match wins the award for the match where I most strongly wished I had brought a better broom. The following 5 people showed up:

Prof. Arielle Lemoyne
Prof. Cody Lewis
Prof. Scarlet Leslie-Lewis
Prof. Tarma Amelia Black
Will Lestrange

Once again, the Quaffle never came out. Instead, we played a few rounds of "firing squad" (where one person competes against everyone else to answer questions; it's not as brutal as you think ;)) followed by getting out our cauldrons for a round of Creaothceann.

Our next pickup will be in a week and a half in our "old" Tuesday evening time slot. We will be meeting in #quidditch on...
Wednesday, March 15 at 2:30 AM HOL!

(NOTE: Because clocks shift on March 12 in the US and Canada, but on March 26 in Europe, the scheduled time for the matches in the US and Canada will be one hour later than "normal". This means 10:30 PM Eastern time, 9:30 PM Central time, 8:30 PM Mountain time, and 7:30 PM Pacific time... on Tuesday, March 14.)
