Re: The Motivation Station (Pep-talks)

Hi Guys *waves shyly* I'm just kicking off the motivation station with a bit of advice I found useful when doing NaNoWriMo. First things first: if this or anything else I suggest doesn’t work for you, please ignore it. We’re all different and work in different ways. The most important thing is to di...

Re: Inkheart: Chapters 16-25

This is so much darker than I was expecting. Spoilers ahead. I haven't felt that sense of real jeopardy for a while but that horrible trip up and down the mountain with the snakes and men behind them really did it for me. I'm also curious, do we think the point about most people thinking of ...

Re: Hol WriMo Lounge

No problem, glad to help. Just send us the chapters that you do of your current story, we'll only be verifying the word count so we don't need something that starts from the beginning. :D

How Long is a Piece of String?

HolWriMo has just been announced for May (Pssst, go check it out!!) but that got me wondering. How long are your writing projects usually? Are you a novelist, a novella person, a short story writer or a flash fictioneer? Do you write poetry? If so, what’s your ideal length in terms of lines or stanz...

Re: Hol WriMo Lounge

Personally, I tend not to worry about chapters until I'm done writing the first draft-there's plenty of time to slice it up once you've got the story down (you can always add stuff or take away stuff at that point and you'll see where the breaks should come more easily). If you want to write in chap...

HolWriMo (Hol Writing Month)

May is HolWriMo (Hol Writing Month)! Great, I hear you cry, but what is that? Well, it’s HOL’s homage to National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) where people aim to write a novel in the 30 days of November with the support of lots of other people attempting the same thing. For anyone going weak at...

Re: Inkheart: Chapters 1-15

I agree with everyone else, I love the literary references-it's like you have an endless stream of in-jokes with the author and characters. A lot of authors who give their protagonist a love of reading either A. don't mention the specific book, B. make up books or C. stick to the classics. I like th...

April Prompt: How the ...

Did you ever hear how the tortoise painted on the hyena’s spots? Or how the Manx cat lost her tail? Or how the elephant’s trunk was created in a nasty game of tug-o-war with a hungry croc? I loved these types of stories as a kid, ones that explained exactly how animals gained their most characterist...

Re: The Hunger Games: Chapters 19-27

I love that summary, Tarma. Although as I used to roleplay THG, I suppose a small part of me wanted to live there, if only briefly. I always find the end a little frustrating. Peeta is within his right to be angry with Katniss but not nearly to the extent he is. The girl had so much more on her plat...

Re: The Hunger Games: Chapters 13-18

For me, these chapters really mark the dichotomy in Katniss's character: the fact that she can switch from remarkably selfish to remarkably selfless very quickly. I've never been able to decide whether she's truly self-absorbed or whether her long seated drive to survive is what causes her to act in...

Re: The Hunger Games: Chapters 7-12

I have the most meaningful comment ever to make.... I'm reading a UK edition for the first time and all the measurements are in metric. It's weird! Rue 'wouldn't tip the scales at 30 kelos'? Say what? And now for a more serious one... To be honest, I think it's unfair of everyone to be so hard on Ka...

March Word Crawl: Goblet of Fire

Welcome to the March Word Crawl! Don’t know what a crawl is? No problem! I’ve given you a run-down of everything you need in the FAQ sticky thread at the top of this sub-forum. In short though, it’s like a writing board game: you write from one instruction to the next to create a story of 300 words ...

Re: Leadership: random thoughts

Fascinating topic, Will! I've had a couple of leadership roles (School Council years ago and coordinating NaNoWriMo for my region last year) and it was always as part of a team . So I guess my main take away from leadership thus far is adaptability and give and take: knowing when to step forward and...
