Re: Ghost Towns

I've never visited one but I read a very detailed account of Centralia many years ago so I'm super excited you've actually been! The description I read was from the 80s when it was still more or less a town (with a few people still living there) so it was very unnerving. It's amazing how quickly wil...

Re: NaNoWriMo

It's that time of year again! I know we have some Wrimos on HOL so big question is: who's braving the challenge this year? What are you hoping to write? I can't believe how quickly it's snuck up on me! Our first meeting in my region should be in exactly 2 weeks and the planning is 'mostly' there.......

Re: Monthly Book Discussions

In November we'll be jumping to conclusions, eating our words and mixing metaphors on the search for Rhyme and Reason as we read Norton Juster's classic The Phantom Tollbooth Synopsis from Goodreads For Milo, everything’s a bore. When a tollbooth mysteriously appears in his room, he drives through o...

Re: How It Works

Where possible, yes. But if there's something that you want to create for yourself (providing it doesn't contradict canon), then you can embroider your character's past with missing detail.

Week 2 - Roleplay

Just as everyone is starting to wonder what on earth is meant to be happening here, a bright light winks into life up near the ceiling. As it gracefully descends, it manifests into a gleaming bubble of no inconsiderable size. It comes to rest a foot above the floor in the very centre of the room. Wi...

Week 2 - Creative

A big part of being around your fellow characters is comparing notes on how you deal with the various situations you find yourself in. Someone at the party decides to give a demonstration of what they consider an essential survival kit. Spurred on to prove them wrong, you decide to wax lyrical about...

Week 2 - Scenario

You stand in the mysterious room, swaying slightly after the vestiges of your greatest fear have vanished from around you. Just as you’re about to turn and exit rapidly through the door, your surroundings change again. Now you’re in a narrow, bare stone room… With a barred window. You gaze at the ni...

Re: Gold Spirit Award 2018-19

Hey guys, just a quick note to say that if beans form part of your goals, I'll need screen shotted evidence of you having the right amount at some stage of the year. It isn't something I can independently verify so the onus is on you to prove it. Thanks!

Re: Doctor Who!

So, the new series premiers tonight! Is anyone else excited? While I'm really looking forward to seing how the new Doctor turns out, I might actually be equally as happy about having a fresh writing team and approach. Particularly excited about the idea of all the stories being stand alone (though h...

October Prompt: Creating a Chill

At Hogwarts the Halloween feast is kind of a big deal. There are massive pumpkins, live bats and even a spot of synchronised gliding. But what about the ghost stories? This month, I’d like you to write me a story (200 words or more) based around a haunting or eerie urban legend. It could be from the...

Re: How It Works

We are having scenarios for our people and asking questions of them. I am looking at the Creative for Week 1 and realizing that the answers are different, depending on 'where' Inigo is in the story. My wondering is this -- 'where' in the story do you want us to have our characters? At the beginning...

Week 1 - Creative

The Institute of Inspirational, Infamous and Outrageous Fictional Folk (who really need to look into a snappy abbreviation for their name) are into cooperation and harmony in a big way. In the spirit of that, they decide to hold an ice-breaker with all the attendees of the conference taking part. Th...
